"Vatti, how can I do this? No one takes me seriously. Even when you come along, as soon as they find out I want them to make a machine to knit socks, they tell me it's a waste of time. Even when I show them the small ones and how many classes I have, they are amused. They don't take it seriously. They don't take me seriously. Why? Everyone knows about the Barbies! Why don't they think other young people can run a business?"
Heinrich had been expecting this. "You have a great product. You have a solid plan. You aren't the only one. Tons of people in Grantville have great products. A lot of them have a solid plan. Some even have both. You need to make them want to invest in you and your product."
Agatha practically wailed. "I've already talked to every blacksmith in Grantville and most of the ones within a half day walk! And the machine shops. Every last one says they are too busy already."
"Then find someone else to ask and find a way to show them you can sell a lot, like by doing that informercial and selling a ton of the small sock knitters."
Now she was getting mad at her dad. "There's no one else to ask! I've already asked all the masters at their shops! I told you that."
"What about the ones who aren't masters yet? Or visiting masters who don't have a shop here? Are there other smiths who could make this other than blacksmiths?"
Agatha sat thinking so long Heinrich fell asleep in the warmth of the sun. "A tinsmith."
He startled awake. "What? A tinsmith? What about a tinsmith?"
"A tinsmith might be able to make the sock knitter. The up-timers always go for the blacksmiths, but they don't seem to remember whitesmiths exist, so they aren't as busy. A tinsmith might be the answer. I will do the informercial, but I will also try to find tinsmith who can make them instead. I'm sorry, Vatti¸ but I think they will be better in metal. Thank you!" She gave him a peck on the check and ran off, presumably, but not necessarily, in search of a tinsmith.
I'm glad she finally figured that out. Wood really isn't strong enough, long-term, for the sock knitters. Heinrich pulled his hat down over his face and went back to napping.
